    Chinese and North American Culture: a New Perspective in Linguistics Studies

Chinese language, ceramics, architecture, music, dance, literature, martial arts, cuisine, visual arts, philosophy, business etiquette, religion, politics, and history have global influence, while its traditions and festivals are also celebrated, instilled, and practiced by people around the world. The culture of North America refers to the arts and other manifestations of human activities and achievements from the continent of North America. The American way of life or simply the American way is the unique lifestyle of the people of the United States of America. It refers to a nationalist ethos that adheres to the principle of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness

    Radiation transport equations in non-Riemannian space-times

    The transport equations for polarized radiation transfer in non-Riemannian, Weyl-Cartan type space-times are derived, with the effects of both torsion and non-metricity included. To obtain the basic propagation equations we use the tangent bundle approach. The equations describing the time evolution of the Stokes parameters, of the photon distribution function and of the total polarization degree can be formulated as a system of coupled first order partial differential equations. As an application of our results we consider the propagation of the cosmological gamma ray bursts in spatially homogeneous and isotropic spaces with torsion and non-metricity. For this case the exact general solution of the equation for the polarization degree is obtained, with the effects of the torsion and non-metricity included. The presence of a non-Riemannian geometrical background in which the electromagnetic fields couple to torsion and/or non-metricity affect the polarization of photon beams. Consequently, we suggest that the observed polarization of prompt cosmological gamma ray bursts and of their optical afterglows may have a propagation effect component, due to a torsion/non-metricity induced birefringence of the vacuum. A cosmological redshift and frequency dependence of the polarization degree of gamma ray bursts also follows from the model, thus providing a clear observational signature of the torsional/non-metric effects. On the other hand, observations of the polarization of the gamma ray bursts can impose strong constraints on the torsion and non-metricity and discriminate between different theoretical models.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in PR

    Tailoring liquid crystal honeycombs by head-group choice in bird-like bent-core mesogens

    We introduce a new class of mesogens that are bird-like in shape and form honeycomb-type supramolecular liquid crystals. They have a bent pi-conjugated aromatic core as wings, a linear or branched chain as the tail and a selection of functional headgroups. Honeycombs of non-centrosymmetric trigonal type (p3m1) are obtained, along with two different complex honeycomb superlattices (p31m and p2gg) and a randomized hexagonal mesophase (p6mm). The key determinant of the self-assembled structure is the nature of interaction of the headgroup with the glycerols at the ends of the wings. The structure depends on whether the sub-columns lying along the edges of the prismatic cells contain pure or mixed headgroups and wing-end hydrogen-bonding groups. Its assembly is further controlled by reducing the tail-chain volume, inducing out-of-plane buckling of the honeycomb. These two modes of symmetry breaking lead to structural polarity both in- and out-of-plane, opening the way to applications in devices relying on properties such as ferroelectricity and second harmonic generation

    Algebraic Structure of Discrete Zero Curvature Equations and Master Symmetries of Discrete Evolution Equations

    An algebraic structure related to discrete zero curvature equations is established. It is used to give an approach for generating master symmetries of first degree for systems of discrete evolution equations and an answer to why there exist such master symmetries. The key of the theory is to generate nonisospectral flows (λt=λl,l≥0)(\lambda_t=\lambda ^l, l\ge0) from the discrete spectral problem associated with a given system of discrete evolution equations.
